Understanding How Nylon 6 Maximizes a Carpet's Complete Lifecycle
When asked, "What are the three most important components to making a sound commercial carpet decision?" most might answer, in no particular order: cost, style and its "green" element.
Often, because of these primary factors, one of the most fundamental elements of a commercial carpet is overlooked – what type of nylon is the carpet made with and how will that affect its recyclability?
There are many ways that nylon can be discussed. Performance is expected and delivered with premium branded nylon carpet fiber, but recyclability is a different matter. Nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 differ the most at the end of a carpet's useful life.
Unlike nylon 6, nylon 6,6 is not as effectively recyclable. Carpet manufactured from nylon 6,6 can not be closed- loop recycled. It can only be "downcycled" into lowerperforming materials and products...or disposed of.
Carpets made with nylon 6 can be recycled, again and again. Because of the raw materials used to manufacture nylon 6, it can be broken down and remanufactured, over and over, without losing any performance characteristics. A simple example to illustrate this point – think of an ice cube in a tray. You can melt the cube, freeze the cube, melt the cube, freeze the cube – over and over – and it will never change. It will always be ice or water. Nylon 6 works in the same regard.
